Atlas of the Carabid Beetles of the Netherlands
Published in Paperback by Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (01 January, 1977)
Authors: H. Turin, J. Haeck, and R. Hengeveld
Average review score:

Outstanding contribution to the carabid literature
This book contains a wealth of information on the biology of all carabid species found in The Netherlands. Anyone who wants to learn more about this fascinating group of insects should own this attractive volume, which complements some of the other books that deal more with taxonomy. At this low price, it is also of outstanding value.

Baedeker's Netherlands (Baedeker's Travel Guides)
Published in Paperback by Baedekers Guides (26 December, 2000)
Author: Baedeker's Guides
Average review score:

Good all-purpose guidebook
Unlike many guidebooks on the Netherlands that only highlight major cities, this book lists practically every city in the country. If you are looking to see the real Netherlands (beyond Amsterdam) this is the book. It also has really good color photos and a bonus fold-out map. My travel agent recommended the Baedeker series as the 'definitive' guidebook series, and the one he uses himself.

Because of the Cats (Penguin Crime Fiction)
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (May, 1985)
Author: Nicolas Freeling
Average review score:

Another sterling book by Freeling
Freeling's second novel, published in 1963, is up to the standards of his best books (King of a Rainy Country, Gun Before Butter, etc.). Well-written and well-conceived, Freeling remains one of my all-time favorite mystery writers.

In this book, Van der Valk uncovers the very unlikely fact of a youth gang from the rich town of Bloemendaal. These teenagers are carrying out particularly vicious robberies in Amsterdam and leave their victim with only the mysterious words "the cats won't like it." To solve this particular mystery, Van Der Valk needs to get beneath the skin of a seemingly sleepy Dutch town to get at the rot that lies beneath.

If you're a fan of Simenon or Durrenmatt, you should consider trying Nicolas Freeling.

Carolrama
Published in Paperback by Charta (February, 1999)
Authors: Carol Rama, Rudi Fuchs, Maria Cristina Mundici, Rudolf Herman Fuchs, Amsterdam (Netherlands) Stedelijk Museum, and Corrado Levi
Average review score:

A Revelation! An Original!
Very nicely illustrated survey of her work. She is one of those artists who are so diverse and innovative in their psychological and physical approach to creation that subsequent artists can copy one piece and build a career on it, (as I realized many had done when viewing these works). There is nothing new under the sun! Carol Rama was doing it in the 30s and she's still at it! So New York! Get humble before this neglected master from Turin and quit being so damned precious, or at least quit pretending to originality!

Church Art and Architecture in the Low Countries Before 1556 (Sixteenth Century Essays & Studies, Vol 37)
Published in Hardcover by Truman State University Press (April, 1997)
Author: Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs
Average review score:

Unprecedented art-historical approach to Dutch history.
With some 200 illustrations, including many photos by the author, and with vast documentation from Netherlands archives, Jeremy Bangs has provided a uniquely valuable and fascinating account of how the "bare ruined choirs" of churches in the Low Countries reveal the "before and after" of the Calvinist Protestant image riots of 1566 [the correct date in the title, by the way]. It will enrich any study of 16th-century Dutch and Belgian history. Art historians are using it, and other historians will do well to pay attention. Prof. Dr. C. O. Bangs (admittedly and proudly the author's father). cobangs@worldnet.att.net

Conquest of a Continent: Nine Generations on the American Frontier
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (December, 2000)
Author: Theodore M. Banta
Average review score:

A saga of America
Even those who are not members of the Banta family can read this book with profit. For it is really a broad saga of the Westward Movement across our continent from pre-
revolutionary days. It is, thus the epic of America.

Cycling the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg (Bicycle Books)
Published in Paperback by Van der Plas Publications (June, 1998)
Authors: Katherine Widing, Kathy Widing, and Jerry Widing
Average review score:

Plan your trip NOW!
What is wonderful about this book is that not only do you get detailed maps with good directions, but there are also overview maps so that you have a sense of where you are in the countries. Everything that you need for a great cycling trip is included, transportation to and within the countries, a few accomodations (and especially where there are no accomodations), noteworthy sites, restaurants and prices. The routes are generally circle routes with side trips and also connect with each other with both total mileage for the whole circle and sectional mileages. Because this book is well organized with excellent maps - I will definately go to Benelux for a leisurely cycle tour - and probably more than once.

A Day on Skates: The Story of a Dutch Picnic
Published in Paperback by Ignatius Press (April, 1997)
Author: Hilda Van Stockum
Average review score:

This book is a treasure
This is a wonderful book for younger children, and their older siblings, too. It portrays the values and attitudes of days gone by when boys were masculine and girls were feminine and everyone was happy that it was so. The story is interesting, the action is well-paced and fun; you feel as if you have been on the picnic with the children! One of our favorite books!

De bevrijding van Nederland, 1944-1945 : oorlog op de flank
Published in Unknown Binding by Sdu Uitgeverij Koninginnegracht ()
Average review score:
